Cindy's Kitchen is one of the traditional stopovers that we make either entering or leaving the Outer Banks. I cannot pass up the opportunity to pick up a slice of her famous 12 Layer Cake. It has a perfect crumb and the chocolate icing on each layer is just enough that it doesn't become cloyingly sweet. The bakery has a wide selection of freshly made goods that its sure to please any sweet tooth.
One quick tip for those who are looking for the mecca of all good things baked; it is located inside the gas station. Other things to consider for the long haul back home include their caramel cake, the egg salad, chicken salad, or pimento cheese sandwiches. If you need that burst of energy consider picking up some southern sweet tea. -

Picked up a 12 layer cake and had it for the week down in Nags Head. Also the HoHo cake is awesome. Stop in and stock up on treats while going down to the beach. Pulling out and making a left is wild but take your time.

On the way to the Outer Bank our son mentioned that had to try the 7 layer cake at Cindy's. I was surprised to find out it was located in a gas station on HWY 158. We tried the pumkin n cream, pecan, lemon, and 7 layer cakes. All were delicious. How do they make the 7 layers so thin? I really wanted a slice of the coconut custard pie they had. It looked sooo good, but they didnt have slices available that day... We will definitely stop over again on the way to OBX.

This is our favorite place to stop for a breakfast biscuit. Since reading the other reviews we will have to get some baked goods next time we are in the area. They are not open on Sundays anymore - had a lovely sign explaining their decision to be closed when we stopped in there this past Sunday.
